Fistula or cannula are a technology in the livestock sector that is quite controversial but has proven to be useful. Where the technology is carried out by making a hole in the stomach of the livestock with a diameter of 20cm. The hole in the cattle’s stomach will be filled with an external tube to be connected to the cattle’s digestive tract.
A hole is made in the cattle’s stomach and a certain tube is installed, its function is to assess how much nutrition is consumed and the smoothness of the cattle’s digestive process. This fistula is very practical for knowing the process of digestion of feed in the cattle’s stomach, the microbial conditions in the cattle’s rumen and other conditions in the cattle’s stomach which can support increasing the quality of a cattle’s production.
Actually, this technology has been applied for a long time. However, at the start of its development there were many protests because it was thought to be able to torture livestock by cutting a hole in the cattle’s stomach.
However, many studies also state that the application of fistula technology is beneficial. This technology actually increases the life expectancy of cattles because the nutrition and nutrients provided are more balanced after going through routine checks. Because of its positive impact, this practice has recently begun to spread throughout the world. Many breeders in Europe and the United States are starting to use this technique to improve the quality of animals on their farms.
According to a report published by Modern Farmer, the fistula technique has been proven to be able to help farmers design better cattle feed, which can minimize greenhouse gas emissions from cattles. This will also make the cattles healthier and fitter.
